Expanded Fragments
These paintings are expanded fragments of visual experiences. They depict color, texture, and light emerging from the periphery, and embrace the traditional beauty of a carefully built up and painterly surface.
Visual experience - The bricks, rust, pavement, and summer sky of Lake Street and Chicago Avenue. The blur of purple and yellow wildflowers against Iowa’s green fields on a hot sunny Interstate 35. The burnt umbers, alizarin crimsons, and ultramarine blues, from Rembrandt to Murakami, in so many museums. I am invariably drawn to fragments. Colors run through each other, textures advance and recede, and paint transforms into luminescence.
